Structure of a Leaf
In this module, you will: learn about the structure of a leaf.

Leaves come in many shapes and sizes. This video walks through the major internal cell types and parts in the structure of a leaf.

• A leaf is made of different parts that include the leaf blade, petiole, midrib, veins and stomata. The leaf blade is the flat and broad part of a leaf. The midrib is the thick line running through the centre of a leaf. Veins are the tiny lines running throughout a leaf.
• The petiole is the stalk that connects the leaf blade of a leaf with the stem.
• Plant cells contains tiny structures called chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll.
• Stomata are the tiny openings present on a leaf.
• Waxy cuticle and epidermis cells - At the top and bottom of the leaf are epidermis cells. These produce a protective waxy cuticle layer.
• Palisade cells - The top of a leaf is exposed to the most sunlight, and so the cells specialised for trapping light are on top of the leaf. These specialised cells are called palisade mesophyll cells. They are packed full of chlorophyll - the green chemical that plants used to absorb light. Most leaves have a large surface area so that they can trap as much sunlight as possible.
• Photosynthesis is the process by which plants prepare their own food using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight.
