This video features the removal of three large lateral limbs from a mature white oak nearing the end of its lifespan. Each limb stretches over 30 feet, and the tree reaches a height of roughly 100 feet. Located 30 feet from a home and above an active service line, the pruning required precise rigging and expert judgment. Though conducted in winter to encourage recovery, the loss of such major limbs can accelerate the tree’s decline. Open wounds will make it more vulnerable to decay and infection. Its best defense lies in CODIT, or Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees, a biological process trees use to contain injury and rot.
