BRICS, established in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has expanded significantly, becoming a vital global organization. By 2024, it added Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE as full members and welcomed nine partner countries in 2025, including Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and the USA. With 18 nations, BRICS represents almost half the world’s population and 41% of global GDP (measured at purchasing power parity).
The organization now has nine full members, nine partner countries, and pending invitations to Algeria, Nigeria, Turkey, and Vietnam. Saudi Arabia declined full membership, and Argentina's invitation was rejected by its leadership aligned with US policies.
BRICS nations account for 36% of global GDP, surpassing the G7 in purchasing power parity. China is the largest contributor at 19%, followed by India (8%), Russia (3.5%), and Brazil (2.4%). The partner countries add 2.4% to global GDP.
BRICS countries are major players in food production, energy, and critical minerals. They dominate in crops like sugar, rice, wheat, and palm oil, with China, India, and Brazil leading global production. Energy resources are abundant, with members contributing significantly to oil, gas, and renewable energy. In minerals, countries like Brazil, China, and Russia are key producers of iron ore, copper, and nickel.
The group also focuses on developing alternatives to the US-dominated financial system. Plans include trading in local currencies, creating gold- and commodity-backed reserves, and enhancing cooperation in sustainable development. With a strong foundation in manufacturing, agriculture, and energy, BRICS plays a pivotal role in shaping the global economy.
