Before 1871, there was no single country called Germany — only a patchwork of states inside the German Confederation. Austria and Prussia competed for influence, revolutions tried and failed, and one king even refused the crown of a united Germany. Finally, under King Wilhelm I of Prussia and his chancellor Otto von Bismarck, three decisive wars paved the way for unification. In 1871, after victory in the Franco-Prussian War, Wilhelm I was proclaimed Kaiser in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles — and the German Empire was born.
