LAKE MARY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A rush hour accident caused an deadly fireball along westbound lanes of Interstate 4 in Lake Mary Wednesday evening. Shortly before 6 p.m., Seminole County firefighters responded to the crash just east of Lake Mary Blvd. Troopers said one man has died from severe burns.
According to a preliminary report by the Florida Highway Patrol, several cars were stopped, or moving slowly, in the far left lane of westbound I-4. A woman who driving an SUV failed to stop and ran into the back of a Jeep Cherokee which slammed into two other cars. Both the SUV and the Jeep Cherokee caught on fire as a result of the crash.
"I saw a big fire explosion," said Kendra Waller who witnessed the accident. "It was insane. I'm still shaken up about it."
The woman who was driving the SUV, 31-year-old Chemwapuwa Jackson, of Altamonte Springs,
was able to get out of the vehicle and was transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford with minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was badly burned and transported to Orlando Regional Hospital in extremely critical condition. A male passenger in the Jeep Cherokee died on scene. No one else was injured.
An FHP spokesperson said Jackson will likely face charges. The crash is still under investigation, but troopers do not believe alcohol is involved.
All westbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours, but all were reopened just after 10 p.m. Eastbound lanes were also backed up for miles. Kendra and hundreds of others were stuck in traffic. "We got stuck in traffic east bound. So people were stopping to look going eastbound and we got stuck in that."
The names of the victims who were in the Jeep Cherokee have not been released.
