When thinking of Japanese art, one typically imagines elegant calligraphy, or woodblock prints of crahing waves and scowling kabuki actors. While significant, this is just a small portion of the history of Japanese artists. Professor Ramona Handel-Bajema, a lecturer at Columbia University and Chief Program Officer with the Japan Society in New York City, talks with us about Japanese artists in America in the Meiji and post-Meiji eras, the role of the Japan Society in building cultural bridges, and her experiences in Fukushima after the 2011 disasters.
