The late, legendary journalist Cokie Roberts explains how Catholic nuns and sisters built up some of the first schools and largest healthcare systems in the United States after their arrival in 1727.

This is the first video in Beyond the Habit, a new series focused on telling the stories of women religious in the United States of America. Beyond the Habit is a co-production of America Media and CARA, the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. It is based on research by Patricia Wittberg and Thomas Gaunt, S.J., in “Pathways to Religious Life,” edited by Thomas Gaunt, S.J.
