While vans are still popular in certain pockets of the automotive hobby, if you want to see the real thing, you need to go back to the mid-1970s, when the custom van craze really took off.
The beginning of the van craze can be traced to the day when EPA regulations stifled the once ubiquitous muscle car nearly out of existence and the arrival of the 55 mph speed limit. You might as well go slow in the ultimate example of rolling personal expression: the custom van.
To understand the origins of the custom van craze, you have to go back a few years. Back in the 1960s, when music festivals such as Woodstock, Monterey Pop, and Altamont were life-altering events, vans were an essential form of transport for getting you and your friends to the festival.
They were plentiful, cheap, and had all kinds of room for 1960s-music-festival-style entertainment, such as vigorous debates about the staying on the Gold Standard, Parcheesi tournaments and quilting bees.
