Making Custom Lockpicks Part 2
Cutting and Designing the Handle Shape

This is the accompanying video series to my talk at #Shellcon with a more in-depth step-by-step demonstration of how to make your own lockpicks and handles.

SAFETY - ATTENTION!
00:54 - My bandsaw guide is a bit high in the video when cutting the pen blank in half. You want the guide to only be slightly above the material, exposing as little of blade as possible to prevent accidents. The fence (the part the wood slides along to keep it moving straight) is a bit tall as well and prevents from lowering the bandsaw guide any further.

Cutting the Handle Shape:
You may use a bandsaw, bench grinder, Dremel, or belt sander. Bandsaws get this done fast and they have metal cutting blades that may work with thin/softer materials. Belt sanders work well with most materials and don't heat up as much as bench grinders. Bench grinders are good for metals, acrylic, and most woods. However, many woods and materials gunk up the stone causing it to heat up and possible burn the material. This gunking up makes it less effective as well. Dremels are effective on wood and acrylic but also take a lot of abuse in the process, limiting their life span. They need to be clamped down to ensure accuracy while grinding and the proper burr type bits are needed.
