China has appointed Zhao Xing as the new ambassador to Afghanistan, the first country to do so since the Taliban retook power in 2021. The Taliban welcomed Zhao Xing’s appointment and said it is a sign for other nations to establish ties with its government.

No country has formally recognised the Taliban government, which has been criticised over human rights violations and crushing women’s rights. China’s move is seen as part of its efforts to cement its influence in the region, as Afghanistan is key to Beijing’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.

China has expressed interest in investing in Afghanistan’s natural resources, estimated to be worth $1 trillion, including copper, lithium and gold deposits. China maintains working missions in Afghanistan despite the Taliban's return to power.

Their foreign ministry describes their policy as "clear and consistent," and the appointment of Zhao Xing as ambassador is considered a routine rotation. Zhao Xing was received by the Taliban leaders at the presidential palace in Kabul in a lavish ceremony that included acting prime minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund and acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

The appointment comes amid condemnation from the UN and other international rights groups over the Taliban’s treatment of women, and its decision to reinstate public executions and lashings.
