Residents in Beijing gathered at the snow-covered Forbidden City, the historical imperial palace of ancient China, as the city experienced heavy snow on Thursday.

The average precipitation on Wednesday was 2.7 mm, reaching 3.1 mm in the urban area. Thursday's forecast includes moderate to heavy snow with temperatures ranging from minus 5 to minus 2 degrees Celsius. A cold wave is expected in the following days, with nighttime temperatures dropping below minus 10 degrees.

Beijing remains on an orange alert for heavy snow, a yellow alert for icy roads, and a blue alert for cold waves. Schools are closed, and flights continue to be canceled.

The Central Meteorological Observatory issued a yellow blizzard warning for a broader northern area, expecting heavy snow in Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Liaoning, and central China.
