The following is a small sample of the information we will bring to screen;

The first third of the programme will, using archive, stills and graphics, explore the history of the plant, from its earliest recorded image; there are traces of hemp in the earliest cave dwelling in Europe, as a food, as a twine and as clothing, from about 10,000 years ago and every civilization since has held hemp in great esteem.

It once accounted for a large percentage of the world's food ; the seed husk, when ground, makes excellent flower, the oil from the pressed inner-seed contains more valuable nutrition than even olive-oil and the resulting cake, still rich in oil, is good eating for both man and beast. It contains a chemical that reduces the body's craving for fatty foods, which we now know as 'omega 3' and another that fights heart disease, 'omega 6' and yet another that is proven to counteract cancers.

It has an inbuilt insecticide, negating the need for expensive and environmentally damaging chemical insecticides and because of the rapid growth and dense foliage, weeds die beneath it. It grows in almost every environment and in almost every climate and both settlers and conquerors alike have recorded finding wild hemp. In the early twentieth century it was discovered that the previously discarded 'waste' from the processing of hemp is cellulose, a vital ingredient for the manufacture of plastic and high octane fuels. Uses even the ancients hadn't utilised.

But, as we'll see, the plant has been virtually eradicated from Western agriculture.
The Egyptians used it extensively and recorded their reverence for the plant, where one of the many uses was for the twine to heave the Pyramid's great stones into place.

Some mummies were shrouded in hemp and its oil was used for medicine and cooking. The Romans had an enormous respect for the plant; it was used in every aspect of their lives. Fine hemp was used for their togas, towels and continued in constant use into the middle ages for clothing, fine paper for books and fine threads for tapestries, and it was used in European medicine, and until the 1930's was an important part of most countries National diet.

It was, for example, credited with saving the fledgling English settler community in the early days of Australian colonisation, when all other crops had failed.
Hemp was extensively grown in England, it was considered 'imperative for the defence of the Realm'. Approximately 15-20% of sown land was hemp.

It was absolutely essential to the success of ocean-going sailing craft and a key ingredient in the European Colonisation of the world.
