Ovarian cyst means the cyst formed on the ovary. The uterus has 2 ovaries - left & right ones. Every cycle water filled balloons like follicles develop to full maturity and rupture releasing the ovum or egg. But, sometimes these water-filled follicles may not rupture, forming the ovarian cyst on the ovary. Cyst if not ruptured may grow up to 3mm to as big as 30 cm to 50 cm mass.

Two types of ovarian cysts :
1. Benign cyst: The non-cancerous cyst is normally a test and scan would help diagnose.
2. Cancerous cyst : may develop during normal menstrual cycles or due to cancer ( not in all cases ), hormone imbalance due to cyst formation may also be the reason.
Irregular cycles may lead to infertility issues in the later stage. Because if the ovary is filled with the cyst the ovulation my be a challenge.
If the cyst is of bigger in size then may get twisted to form the ovarian torsion. This blocks the blood supply, may bleed inside, a big cyst may be formed. May be 5 to 10 out of 100 may result as cancerous not all the ovarian cysts.

Laparoscopy for ovarian cyst: when to remove the ovarian cyst?
Cyst if the size of 4 cm requires surgical removal, ovarian torsion is to be removed laparoscopically as a day care procedure and most of the cases can go home the same day evening.

In which age groups these ovarian cysts are seen?
common in the age groups of 15 to 45 women and in postmenopausal woman also.

Is PCOS and Ovarian cyst are same?
The misconception is PCOS means small water-filled cysts on the Ovary, Ovarian cyst is a single big one
but commonly seen in PCOS patients.

How do we know we have PCOS, the Ovarian cyst symptoms?
Irregular menses, mass abdomen, weight loss, and loss of appetite are the symptoms and a scan report will help diagnose an Ovarian cyst. The treatment for the Ovarian cyst would be decided by the gynecologists'.
