Judith Butler believes that gender is perceived performance in society primarily through language because gender identity is constructed through performative acts like speech patterns. She says that there exists a possibility to construct gender by undoing the assigned role. Gender performativity is controlled by cultural sanctions and gender norms determined within societal structure.
