Hypocaustum is based on the ancient Roman hypocaustum principle, of warm air circulating in the cavities of the wall, utilizing the bricks thermal mass to store and gradually release energy. As a result of the wall's various heights more or less closed chambers are formed and the structure indicates other uses of the cavity spaces.
