Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a branch of fluid dynamics that involves analyzing and solving fluid flow problems using numerical analysis and specialized computer software. It is used in various engineering sciences to predict the performance and functioning of engineering systems, saving cost and time compared to conducting real-world experiments. CFD has found increasing application in agriculture, for purposes such as analysis of airflow and microclimate within horticultural greenhouses. Previous research showed that both are significantly affected by changes in the greenhouse geometry as well as type and location of the venting system.
Within this bachelor thesis, airflow and microclimate within horticultural high-tunnel type greenhouses used at the Guelph Center for Urban Organic Farming in Ontario, Canada was investigated using CFD simulations. Specific focus was on the influence of insect screens on greenhouse ventilation and the validation of the CFD simulation results with historic data measured on-site during the 2016 growing seasons. An open-source suite of CFD software, including OpenFOAM and building upon the Ubuntu-Linux distribution “Gm.Linux” was used to conduct the CFD study. It showed full capability to implement all necessary steps of the CFD study solve this class of problem.
The insect screens were successfully implemented through a porous media and the Darcy- Forchheimer-Equation and the correct physical behaviour was successfully validated with a wind-tunnel experiment. The simulation of the whole domain showed feasible results for the general airflow and turbulence behaviour in the domain and around the high-tunnels. However, the historic data could not validate the simulation results. The study suggests several possibilities to improve the model and simulation results, namely a Grid Convergence Study, an Atmospheric Boundary Layer and several sub-models for crop growth, thermal and solar processes in the high-tunnels.
The results of this study are an important contribution towards the establishment of the novel application of OpenFOAM for CFD studies in the horticultural domain. Using open-source software will help overcome some of the limitations of commercial CFD software (e.g. “black box system”, high licensing fees) which have been used dominantly in prior studies.
