The Full Story (The Trap of Alliances): The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand didn't have to lead to a World War. It happened because Europe was a ticking time bomb of secret alliances.

Why did it happen so fast?

The "Blank Check": Before attacking Serbia, Austria-Hungary asked its powerful ally, Germany, for support. Germany gave them a "Blank Check," promising unconditional backing. This emboldened Austria to declare war.

The Russian Bear: Russia couldn't stand by while its Slavic ally, Serbia, was destroyed. When Russia mobilized its army, Germany felt threatened and declared war on Russia.

The French Connection: France was allied with Russia, so Germany declared war on France too.

The Final Straw: To attack France quickly, Germany invaded neutral Belgium. This violation forced Great Britain to enter the war.

By August 4, 1914, all the major powers were at war. The dominoes had fallen.
