(12 Jul 2019) US Congressional Democrats are applauding the decision of Labor Secretary Alex Acosta to resign over the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein plea deal in 2008.  
Acosta was the US attorney in Miami when he oversaw a non-prosecution agreement that enabled Epstein to avoid federal sex charges by pleading guilty to state charges and serving 13 months in jail.
Similar charges recently filed against Epstein by federal prosecutors in New York had put Acosta's role in the 2008 deal under renewed scrutiny.
"I think Secretary Acosta did the right thing," said Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland.
"This is a guy who was nominated by the president to be responsible for policing the human trafficking laws to protect the vulnerable to make sure that child labor laws weren't broken and he never should have been there in the first place," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida.
"It's it's revolting that it took this long," she said.
Epstein reached the deal to secretly end a federal sex abuse investigation involving at least 40 teenage girls that could have landed him behind bars for life
In addition to pleading guilty to state charges and spending 13 months in jail, Epstein paid settlements to victims and is a registered sex offender.
