She was fierce in her protection — both of nature and of innocence. Hunters who disrespected the wild, or men who threatened her privacy or purity, often paid with their lives. The famous hunter Actaeon, for example, was torn apart by his own hounds after accidentally seeing Artemis bathing.

Although many today associate Artemis with the moon, this was not part of her earliest myths. In ancient Greece, the goddess of the moon was originally Selene. It was only in later times, through Roman influence and evolving beliefs, that Artemis became closely linked to moonlight and the night.

But at her heart, Artemis was always the wild goddess — a symbol of freedom, protection, and the untamed spirit of nature.
