Want to see Boston like a local? I take you to Granary Burying Ground, one of the city’s oldest sites and a stop on the Freedom Trail. In use as early as 1660, this is nevertheless only the third oldest graveyard in the city. Notable people buried here include John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, Crispus Attucks (one of five victims of the Boston Massacre, he was of African and Native descent), and members of Benjamin Franklin’s family, though not Franklin himself.

Located directly on Tremont Street, one of downtown’s busiest roads, and within a five minute walk of City Hall, the Downtown Crossing shopping mall, the Boston Common, and the Massachusetts State House, the Burying Ground still has a feeling of partial seclusion and restfulness. The city’s sounds reach you, but are muffled by buildings on three sides.
