What Does It Mean When a Lizard Falls on You?

The word for omen in Sanskrit is “shakunam”, and the knowledge pertaining to omens is called Shakuna Shastra. This is also called Nimitha and is considered one of the branches of Vedic astrology. As per Shakuna Shastra, an omen is a phenomenon, which is believed to foretell the future. It is believed to be a divine insight or message. People all over the world believe in omens, and they are associated with different meanings. The events could be either auspicious or inauspicious. Many Hindus subscribe to the belief that omens can predict future events. In fact, the study of omens and their meanings is a science, according to them. Hindus believe in various types of omens like a black cat crossing one's path, twitching of eyes, breaking of a mirror, lizard falling on the body, lizard's sounds, etc. The last two especially, have great significance.

The study of the falling of lizards is called Gauli Shastra in India. 'Gauli' means 'lizard'. According to Gauli Shastra, every movement of a lizard holds significance, and there are not less than 65 places where the lizard can fall on the human body that would foretell good and bad happenings. It also says that when a lizard falls on the head, it is a bad omen. It indicates disputes or quarrels. If it falls on the center of the head, it spells disease.

Lizard falling and its meanings in various part of India

Muhurat Martand, a well-known astrological text, says that if a lizard falls on any body part, excluding the navel, stomach, and chest, it is said to be a good omen. Supposedly, it is auspicious if the lizard falls on the right side body parts of the man and the left side body parts of a woman.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthana Telugu Almanac says:

✅If the lizard falls on the back side of the head, then it means bad luck for the person's maternal uncle.
✅If the lizard falls on the right portion of the head, the omen is bad for one`s brother.
✅If it falls on the center of the head, it indicates illness to oneself.
✅If the lizard falls on the crown of the head, it portends death.
✅But, if it falls on the back of the crown, it indicates good fortune, but the front part of the crown signals ill luck for the person's maternal uncle.
✅If it falls only on the hair, then it stands for difficulties.

Oriya Almanac, Kohinoor Panjika says:

If the lizard falls on a person's head, it foretells gain of property, land or decides the fate of a king or ruler.

There is an interesting incident about a lizard falling on the Odisha Chief Minister`s head when he was contesting for re-election for his third term of office. A lizard fell on the head of then Chief Minister Biju Patnaik just before the elections on May 16, 2009. He was able to return to power for a successful third term. His party members were overjoyed by this.

Remedies for Lizard Falling on the Head

Ancient texts say whenever a lizard falls on a person, especially on the head, one should immediately take a bath, light a lamp to God, recite Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, take Panchgavya (a mixture of cow`s ghee, cow`s milk, cow`s curd, cow`s urine, cow dung, and donate til seeds, gold, and earthen lamps.

If one visits Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kanchipuram, one can see and touch the golden lizard and the silver lizard, and also the sun and moon images on the roof, just behind the sanctum sanctorum. Touching them is believed to remove all ill effects or doshas caused due to the falling of lizards in the past and future.
