Hi all, I haven't had much time for these things for a while, so I have decided to share my program and hardware setup.

@AngeTheGreat has overtaken my basic setup in accuracy and usability, but if you want to do it this way then this might help.

Not sure how helpful the program will be (real programmers beware) as I developed it over a number of years and probably don't understand it myself anymore. It was interesting developing this, kinda. Maybe there will be something useful in there for someone.

I won't teach you Arduino but if you have specific questions put them in the comments.

I've described the setup in the comments of many of my videos but the hardware basics are:

an Arduino mega (I started with a pro mini) switches 12 volts via Darlington array ICs to control the speakers with fixed pulsewidth signals, I worked out how long to make these experimentally, can't remember how long but it is in the program. The 12 volt signals go to two speaker boxes, each of which has 8 drivers in it. Each speaker box has a tin can over it for reverb? to make it sound more engine-like.

To record sound I started with a Zoom H1 stereo microphone, but moved to using two fairly cheap Boya Lavalier microphones (hooked up to the line in of the microphone, my camera sound recording is terrible even with external microphones) placed inside the tin cans so I could turn the volume down without picking up too much ambient noise.

The LED/light side isn't clearly shown but each cylinder has an LED with a series resistor (~300 ohms???) inside a short length of PVC pipe sandwiched between a whiteboard/chipboard base and a plywood top with a hole to let the light out. The diffuser between the PVC pipe and plywood with a hole in it is frosted LDPE from a plastic milk container.

The tachometer with a silver bezel is from AliExpress. It isn't a real PIVOT.

The tachometer with a black bezel, speedometer and boost gauge are driven by small servos, the servos in the tachometer and speedometer are 270 degree units.

The optical tachometer is to confirm the simulation is running at the correct RPM. The stopwatch is from when I controlled RPM with a potentiometer to keep the RPM sweeps to about a minute.

the 7 segment display is from eBay or similar and also driven by the Arduino.

Briefly the program works by reciting arrays of RPM values at a fixed time interval (50 milliseconds). these are calculated in an excel/alternative spreadsheet, then exported as .csv and pasted into the program. From memory transposing was required to get the RPM values as a string rather than in a column.

Firing interval is worked out with a spreadsheet and entered as an array too.
