Crichton Castle - Where the Black Dinner was planned and the inspiration for the ‘Red Wedding’?

A castle set in a remote valley near Edinburgh. Home to the Crichton family before passing to the Earls of Bothwell. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here and married the 4th Earl Bothwell, James Hepburn.
Sir Walter Scott used Crichton castle as the home of his fictional character in his poem Marmion.
Of architectural significance, the castle boasts the first straight staircase in Scotland, and the magnificent facade of faceted stonework.
The Black Dinner, involving the murder of the Earl of Douglas that was planned by William Crichton at Edinburgh Castle inspired George R R Martin’s ‘Red Wedding’ in Game of Thrones.
