Percy Grainger (Melbourne, 08.07.1882 - White Plains, N.Y., 20.02.1961): Australian pianist and composer. First received piano lessons from Louis Pabst.
1894: debut in Melbourne
1895-1901: Hoch-Conservatory in Frankfurt, with James Kwast. He took private lessons from Karl Klimsch, an amateur composer with a great interest in folk music. Grainger was part of the "Frankfurt Group" together with fellow students Balfour Gardiner, Norman O'Neill, Roger Quilter and Cyrill Scott.
1901-1914: lived in London.
1902: debut as concert pianist (Tchaikovsky). Made a tour through England with Adelina Patti.
1903: Met Ferruccio Busoni and took lessons from him, but this was not a success.
1905: Started collecting folk songs, made recordings with a phonograph from 1906 (more than 200 Edison wax rolls). Wrote more than 300 songs in total. Friend of Frederick Delius and Edvard Grieg. Very interested in Nordic music (Scandinavia, Finland, Greenland, Iceland etc.).
1914: emigrated to America. Performed with Nellie Melba (Boston, Pittsburg). Played for president Woodrow Wilson. Recorded piano rolls for Duo-Art. Signed a contract with Columbia.
1918: American citizenship.
1922: His mother, who had raised him very strictly and with whom he had a symbiotic relationship, committed suicide.
1928: Marriage with Ella Ström
He started teaching courses, among others at New York University (1932-1933).
1934-1935: radio lectures on music for the Australian Broadcasting Commission
1937-1944: gave courses at Interlochen International Music Camp
1938: Opened the Grainger Museum in Melbourne.
He gave c. 274 charity concerts during the war, often for the army.
He gave his last concert in 1960.
He died of cancer.
