The British Expeditionary Force would be thrown back across the Channel by the relentless German blitzkrieg, culminating in the famed evacuation of Dunkirk. In the tense days that followed, the threat of invasion loomed large in the minds of Great Britain's government, and steps were taken to raise a citizen militia capable of resisting a potential hostile landing by sea or air long enough for the nation's beleaguered regular forces to mount a counter attack.


Stood down in late 1944 and officially disbanded on the last day of 1945, the Local Defence Volunteers - later the Home Guard - would most famously return to the public consciousness with the television show 'Dad's Army,' which poked fun with a knowing wink at the slightly haphazard, slapdash efforts of the early Home Guard in the same way as Noël Coward and George Formby had back in the '40s. Thankfully, those volunteers who were too old or declared unfit for regular military service would never have to see action against a determined, well-equipped invader, but we wargamers do have a tendency to wonder, "What if..."

THE BASE: Layer of slightly watered down PVA, then sand. Cover in Flat Brown, heavily overbrush with Brown Sand, then drybrush Dark Sand. PVA again and static grass with tufts to taste, and paint base rim in Flat Brown. Done!
