Activate the Show Hidden Characters option from the bottom of the Type menu.

With the above two options active, characters such as Spaces and Paragraph Returns will be displayed in blue within text. The normally invisible Column Break is also displayed in blue. Just like any other character it can be selected and deleted if required. This is a very powerful way to debug problems with documents.
