Researchers have developed innovative new contact lenses that enable humans to see and detect near-infrared (NIR) light. These lenses incorporate special nanoparticles embedded within a flexible polymer matrix. The nanoparticles absorb invisible infrared photons and convert them into visible light, allowing the wearer to perceive infrared signals that would normally be undetectable. In both animal and human trials, participants using these lenses were able to detect flashing infrared light signals and even perceive infrared light through closed eyelids, as NIR light penetrates skin more effectively than visible light. Although the technology is still in early stages and currently provides limited resolution, it represents a major breakthrough toward enhancing human vision and could have future applications in night vision, security, medical imaging, and assisting individuals with certain visual impairments.
