Pat Ogden: One of the important elements I think is that it's inevitable that we have bias because our culture has bias. You know, we live in a white supremacy culture in America, where whiteness is elevated and bodies of color are not. It's not just the United States; this elevation of whiteness permeates European and Western cultures. We are steeped in it, and we grew up in it. No matter the color of our skin or our social locations or identities, we can't help but embody that bias. I also think of it at a more primitive level as mammals. You taught me this, right? We instinctively perceive difference and feel uncomfortable with it on a bodily level. That's really true, and then we develop belief systems about that discomfort that can be very harmful.

We then layer that discomfort with racism, oppression, and inequality. Difference becomes the way we categorize groups of people. For example, many will categorize black men as dangerous and black women as angry. Our brains are wired to categorize and tell stories as a shortcut, but when this happens in the context of inequality, racism, and systemic oppression, it does real damage beyond just apprehending something negative happening with difference.

Janina Fisher: Absolutely, and one of the things that I think you have really spoken to and that's so important is that we can't be free of bias because it's in our bodies. But what we can do is be aware of it.
