YUNNAN | Three Must See Ancient Towns in Southern China: Lijiang, Dali and Shaxi

In early January, me and Charlie managed to score a week off work so we decided to explore the ancient towns in Yunnan, one of the most ethnically diverse provinces in China. First we flew into Lijiang and stayed in Lijiang Ancient Town. Out of the three towns we visited this was by far the most touristy but still boasted great views of Jade Dragon Snow mountain and cute shops. From there we popped on a train to Dali. This town was lively and filled with local people as well as tourists. Some of the highlights of this town were heading to a well known bar called Bad Monkey and soothing our hangovers with crispy street potatoes. Finally, we took a private car to Shaxi which was by far our favourite town of the three that we visited. It was the least affected by tourism and a short bike ride into the neighbouring villages brought a glimpse into rural Chinese living.
