Описание к видео FERRY FIASCO: Derek Mackay asked why he approved £30m loan when there was no build progress

Mr Mackay was asked by MSP Colin Beattie 'Why did you approve the drawdown of £30 million which was conditional on the vessels progress, because the progress wasn't there? There is clear evidence the vessels were in delay already.'

Mr Beattie continued 'So given that the funding was linked to progress, what was the justification?'

Mr Mackay replied 'We had a responsibility to try and complete the contracts and a wider responsibility was around the yard, the yard's future, the workforce, and for that reason, the government made other interventions.'

Disgraced former finance secretary Derek Mackay returned to Holyrood last week to face questions from MSPs on the delays to two CalMac ferries.

Mr Mackay was transport minister when the contract was approved to build two ferries at the Ferguson Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow.

He later went on to become finance secretary – but quit the job dramatically on the morning of the Scottish budget in February 2020 after it emerged he had been messaging a teenage schoolboy on social media.
