Lear's Macaw

Описание к видео Lear's Macaw

Today we present you a very endangered species of parrots, the Lear´s Macaw. In 2001 only 246 individuals were living in a very small area in the semi-deserts of north-east of Brazil. In this critical situation Loro Parque and Loro Parque Fundación as very successful breeders of rare species were asked by the Brazilian authorities for help. So Loro Parque Fundación spent nearly 387.000,- US Dollar to protect this species in the wild , where it was threatened by illegal trade and by the deforestation of an important nutritive plant, the Licuri palm tree.

At Loro Parque this species is successfully bred, so that this year we were able to return nine of these majestic birds to Brazil, where, thanks to the support of Loro Parque Fundación, meanwhile about 1.300 Lear´s Macaws exist. Lear's macaws breed in rocky caves in cliffs. In this video you can see how the experts at Loro Parque recreate their natural habitat with rocks and caves.
