Celebrating the quadricentenary of the 9th Sikh guru, Sāhib Srī Gurū Teg Bahadur, with the late legends of Gurbāṇī Saṅgīta, Bhai Avtar Singh Gurcharan Singh, hosted by Bhai Baldeep Singh. Bhai Baldeep Singh will be joining live from New Delhi, India, 6:30 PM (India), on Saturday, May 1, 2021, and play the recordings of his legendary granduncles.
𝗜𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼:
Bhai Gurcharan Singh Ragi (1915-2017), and his younger brother, Bhai Avtar Singh (1926-2006), were the greatest masters of Gurbāṇī Saṅgīta of their generation. Direct descendants of Bhai Sādhāraṇ, one of Guru Nanak Dev’s foremost disciples, the brothers were 11th generation exponents of one of the most illustrious of Sikh families. They started training at an early age under their legendary father, Bhai Jwala Singh of Ṭhaṭṭā Ṭibbā, who besides acquiring the musical heritage from his father Bhai Deva Singh, had the benefit of learning from two famous maestros of the nineteenth century, Bhai Sarda Singh and Bhai Vasava Singh (Baba Rangi Ram). Apart from rigorous Swar Sadhana and correct rendition of most intricate śabadrītas (compositions/kritīs), both the brothers studied jōṛī and pakhāwaj from the iconic Ustād, Bhai Arjan Singh ‘Tarangar’. Bhai Avtar Singh and Bhai Gurcharan also studied with the legendary classical vocalists and Gurbāṇī Saṅgīta exponents, Ustad Batan Singh of Mehlī (Kapurthala) and Bhai Dal Singh of Lasāṛā, both, close friends of their illustrious father.
Bhai Avtar Singh and Gurcharan Singh belonged to a rare category of Sikh Kīrtankārs who are fully conversant and apt in singing all the ragas, lores and variants of the music such as chaṅtt, vārs, paṛtāla and dhurpadē contained in the Gurbāṇī, first compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru, Arjan Dev, in 1604 AD. They received national and international recognition and were conferred many state and national awards. Bhai Gurcharan Singh was also been conferred with the Shiromani Sahitkar Award by Punjab Languages Department. Both the brothers were senior fellows of the Punjabi University, Patiala.
Bhai Gurcharan Singh and his younger brother, Bhai Avtar Singh Ragi, made one of the most important contributions to the world of musicology when they painstakingly put together 492 notations of the original śabadrītas or compositions, dating back to times of the Gurus. This path-breaking research was published by the Punjabi University in two volumes titled Gurbāṇī Saṅgīta: Prācīna Rīta Ratnāvalī (1979) and has since acquired a near iconic status and bears eloquent testimony to the musical genius of the great gurus. A 2011 Tagore fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, Bhai Gurcharan Singh continued to write and had to his credit 12 books. In continuation of his earlier work, he zealously devoted himself to further compile notations of nearly 200 compositions, which had remained undocumented. By April 2008, Bhai Gurcharan Singh had finished teaching and notating 215 compositions in 50 ragas for his grandnephew, Bhai Baldeep Singh, at the ripe age of 94.
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀:
It was Bhai Sāhib Aridaman Singh of Bagṛian who eventually counseled the two brothers, Bhai Avtar Singh Gurcharan Singh, to notate the two volumes, Gurbāṇī Saṅgīta: Prācīna Rīta Ratnāvalī. These were published by the Department of Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala, in 1979. The first recordings of the co-authors were shared with Bhai Baldeep Singh by his uncle, the son of Bhai Gurcharan Singh, Bikramjit Singh Sambi, in 1987. Shortly after, Bhai Ashok Singh Bagṛīan and later Bhayee Sikandar Singh Bagṛian shared their recordings of Bhai Avtar Singh Gurcharan Singh. Bhai Gurcharan Singh, Bhai Swaran Singh, and Bhai Sikandar Singh Bagṛian have all passed on their copies of the original recordings to Bhai Baldeep Singh for restoration and editing, which is a very expensive and time-consuming endeavour. The recordings are being shared courtesy of the conservation of Gurbāṇī Saṅgīta spearheaded by the collective elders of the two illustrious (Bhai-kē) families, one, the Bagṛian residing descendants of Guru Hargobind’s disciple, Bhai Roopa, and the other, by the Ṭhaṭṭā Ṭibbā residing descendants of the Guru Nānak Dēv’s disciple, Bhai Sadhāraṇ. These recordings are not only ‘cleaned’ and semi-restored, but also edited and ‘corrected’ by Bhai Baldeep Singh at the Anād Foundation’s archival studio situated in New Delhi, India.
