There are plenty of ways to show that the characters are going to go on to live happy lives at the end of Stranger Things. It's assumed they'll defeat Vecna, and this will be their biggest victory yet. It will likely lead to the end of the Upside Down, meaning the characters no longer have to spend their time fighting off creatures from the alternate dimension. The series could even flash forward a few years into the future, which would catch the characters up to their actors' ages.

The series could show how the characters are coping with the trauma of what they've been through while also living much easier lives, knowing that everything is finally back to normal. In fact, not flashing forward into the future would allow fans to use their imagination to create what they believe would happen to the Stranger Things characters in the present day. The show doesn't have to bring the story into the modern day in order for fans to understand that their favorite characters are going to be okay.
