Vehicle safety was a top priority when all variants in the 114 and 115 series were subjected to comprehensive model refinement measures in September 1973. Many of the new details were borrowed from the SL and SLC models of the 107 series and the latest S-Class (W 116). These included, for example, flexibly mounted exterior rear-view mirrors which were adjusted from inside, as well as dirt-deflecting trim strips on the A-pillars to keep the side windows clean even in adverse weather conditions, together with a rain runnel on the rear screen. The improved models were also given a cosmetic makeover and, in particular, adapted to match the outward appearance of the S-Class. The radiator grille was lower and broader, the quarter lights in the side windows were discontinued, the license plate panel was attached to the front bumper rather underneath it, and there was a new design for the handle to the trunk lid. With the adaptation of the front apron to match the design of the S-Class, all models from 250 to 280 E – as well as the coupes – lost their double front bumper. The only sedans to remain visually distinctive from the other variants were the 280 and 280 E models since the designers opted for them to retain their extended rear bumper.
