Abandoned Sites In The Soviet Mining City Of Chiatura, Georgia

Описание к видео Abandoned Sites In The Soviet Mining City Of Chiatura, Georgia

After completing the 4 day trek from Mestia to Ushguli, I headed to the city of Chiatura for a completely different experience.

In 1879, the Georgian poet Akaki Tsereteli discovered manganese and iron ores deposits in the area. The JSC Chiaturmanganese company was established to manage the huge deposit, estimated at 239 million tonnes. The city of Chiatura was born.

In 1954, at the orders of Stalin himself, a cable car system was installed to take workers from the valley up to the mines. These cable cars were free to use and were never upgraded. It is these cable cars, nicknamed "the coffins of the sky', that attracted tourists to the area.

In 2017, the cable cars were deemed unsafe and closed permanently, to be replaced by a new system.

Join me on a journey to see if Chiatura has anything to excite travellers now the cable cars are gone.
