Family reunions and casual get-togethers play an important role in modern day society -- people almost take them for granted. Unfortunately, the growing conflict in Libya has rendered such events as luxury for many citizens of Benghazi.

Mr. Arnes, a Benghazi-based driver had finished his work early on a Friday, in order to spend the cherished weekends with his family.

When business was going well, he would drive between Tripoli and Benghazi every week. But ever since the conflict erupted, both the number of customers and his income plunged to their lowest levels -- making Mr. Arnes's income unstable, and the future of his 14 children uncertain.

In days prior to the conflict, women, old and young, used to cook every weekend for the family. Now, the scheduled reunion is looked upon as a rare treat.

Besides taking its toll on families, the Libyan conflict has also led to food and energy shortages in the city of Benghazi. All food is now imported from neighboring Egypt, and the prices of daily necessities such as eggs, tomatoes and beef have doubled.

Mr. Arnes's sister Eamon was particularly struck by this, as she has to support her newborn child -- a baby boy named Mohammed.
