MOUNT SHIROUMA (shiroumadake)TREK IN JAPAN

Mount Shirouma (Shiroumadake), standing at 2,932 meters, is one of Japan's iconic peaks and part of the Northern Alps in Nagano Prefecture. Known for its stunning views, diverse alpine flora, and lingering snowfields even in summer, it attracts hikers from around the world. The trek is considered moderately challenging, suitable for both experienced hikers and adventurous beginners.

The most popular route starts from Sarukura Lodge and leads to the Shirouma Daisekkei, a large snow valley that remains covered in snow well into the summer. This part of the trek involves traversing through the snowfield, requiring proper equipment like crampons. The climb through the Daisekkei can be steep and physically demanding, but it offers a unique hiking experience.

Once past the snow valley, hikers ascend through rocky trails, with the view opening up to reveal breathtaking panoramas of surrounding peaks. There are a couple of mountain huts near the summit, providing rest and overnight stays if needed. The final push to the top rewards trekkers with 360-degree views, including vistas of Mount Tsurugi and Mount Tateyama.

The trek is best done between late June and early October, depending on snow conditions. Outside this period, the route can become dangerous due to heavy snow and cold weather. Though challenging, the trek to Mount Shirouma is famous for its natural beauty and is a memorable experience for anyone seeking adventure in Japan's rugged mountain landscapes.
