Different Ways of Eating
Different animals have different ways of eating.

Swallowing
Some flesh-eating animals like snakes and frogs swallow their entire food. They do not bite or chew their food as they do not have teeth to bite or chew. A frog has a long and sticky tongue. It shoots out its tongue to catch insects. The insect gets stuck to the tongue and the frog again rolls its tongue inside.

Gnawing
Animals like rat, squirrel, rabbit, etc., have sharp front teeth, both in their upper and lower jaws, to cut through nuts, seeds or fruits. They bite food with their sharp teeth. This is called gnawing the food. Such animals are called gnawers.

Sucking
Some insects like mosquitoes, butterflies, honeybees, etc., suck their food. These insects have long and pointed sucking tubes to suck nectar from the flowers.

Chewing the Cud
Ever noticed a cow or a buffalo chewing, even when they are not having their food? Some animals like the cow, first swallow their food and after sometime, they bring it back into their mouth from the stomach, and chew it. This is known as chewing the cud. Such animals are called cud chewing animals.

Food Chain
Eating food and being eaten as food, forms a chain called food chain. A food chain shows the order in which animals eat each other. For example, plants are eaten by a deer, the deer is eaten by a tiger. The tiger dies and is eaten by the vultures.
It is interesting to know, that food chains start with plants, as plants can prepare their own food and are called producers. This food gets passed onto the plant eating animals which are further eaten by flesh eating animals. When the animals die, they are fed upon by animals like vultures, hyenas, etc.
