Meet Layla, founder and creative director of Maya Congee Cafe. This cafe was born out of inspiration of being a new mother to her daughter Maya and as part of preserving their Chinese heritage. According to Layla, for many of us in the Asian diaspora, congee is one of the first foods we were ever fed, the comfort offered when we were sick, the quiet centerpiece of so many family mornings. And if you haven’t tried it before, she recommends this for someone who wants a soft, warm, soothing feeling when they eat. It’s like a hug in a bowl ❤️

You can taste it for yourself the next time you’re in Bed-Stuy or Clinton Hill. I recommend the tofu and mushroom congee (with extra pickled radish!).
