Indonesia is an agrarian nation, where more than 142 million people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Ensuring affordable and reliable fertilizers is therefore not just an industrial task—it is a national responsibility tied directly to food security.

In recent years, this challenge has intensified. Following the withdrawal of fertilizer subsidies, producers are required to maintain affordability and quality, even as production costs continue to rise. For PT Petrokimia Gresik, Indonesia’s most integrated fertilizer producer, efficiency is no longer optional—it is essential.

One critical issue emerged from phosphoric acid production: the accumulation of gypsum, a non-hazardous by-product. In early 2024 alone, more than 1,500 tons of gypsum were generated each month, with over 80% left unused, creating high costs, operational congestion, and risks to production continuity.

To address this, Petrokimia Gresik introduced PetroCAS—a circular economy innovation that transforms gypsum from waste into a valuable input for NPK fertilizer production. Through advanced formulation redesign and tighter process control, gypsum was successfully integrated without compromising quality or plant stability.

The results are transformative. 1,260 tons of gypsum are now utilized every month, waste management costs are reduced by Rp15 billion annually, and NPK production is stabilized at around 360,000 tons per year. This fertilizer now supports agriculture across 5,700 hectares of farmland, benefiting hundreds of thousands of farmers nationwide.

PetroCAS also delivers strong environmental and social impact—reducing workplace risks, lowering dust exposure, and contributing to a verified 49,514 tons of CO₂ emission reduction potential.

PetroCAS proves that with the right innovation, industrial challenges can become strategic advantages—strengthening fertilizer affordability, operational resilience, and Indonesia’s food security for the future.
