Hello, and thank you for watching our first video.
Although this isn't our first tank, it is a whole new experience for us in terms of having a planted tank and caring for a new species.

Since recording, Wilson has had two new female cory sterbai added to the tank (Shelly and Pebbles). They all seem very comfortable with each other and reacted better than expected when we introduced them (we did have our guppy tank on hand in case there were any signs of aggression from the Betta).

To start the water cycle, we squeezed the filter sponge from our guppy tank into Wilson's tank to add some bacteria to get the water cycle started. If you don't already have a pre-cycled tank, we recommend that you let the water cycle for 2-3 weeks with the pump running and monitor ammonia until it's no longer present (you may find an ammonia testing kit where you mix chemicals and match your colour to a provided chart more reliable than dipsticks).

For any driftwood/bog wood, you should soak it in water for a few days and change the water daily to remove wood particles and tannins (the particles that stain your tank). Tannins aren't harmful, but they do stain the water yellow and you may not like the way it looks. However, some fish may prefer stained water.

For the first few weeks of having the tank, you should do partial water changes of around 20% every few days with dechlorinated water to help reduce chemical spikes.

When using a thick layer of substrate or gravel, you should agitate the substrate to release any C02 pockets which can harm fish if they build up. To do this we use a pair of long aquarium tweezers to poke at the gravel and release any trapped gas with every water change.

With picky fish, try to remove uneaten food. Leaving food to sit for longer than two minutes can increase ammonia levels over time.

Try to clean the filter sponge every four weeks, or a shorter period of time if you feel the tank is getting too dirty. Use a cup or two of water from your tank to clean the filter to prevent rinsing the healthy bacteria away. Remove any plant matter or debris from the filter and then tip the dirty water away.
