What Does Cotinus (AKA Smoketree) Essential Oil Smell Like?

A lot of people—including members of our staff—haven’t had the opportunity to experience the deep, complex aroma of organic cotinus essential oil. With that in mind, we took some of our team outside for an “OMG you’ve got to smell this!” break. This steam-distilled, earthy, resinous oil has an underlying sweetness with green herbaceous notes and forest scents. Distilled from the leaves and twigs of Cotinus coggygria—also known as the smoke tree or smoke bush for its fluffy, “smoky” clusters of flowers—it has similar aromatic qualities as galbanum essential oil and is often used for topical cleansing, soothing occasional blemishes, and generally supporting skin health and dry skin.
