STORYLINE:
Ukrainian politicians representing the bloc of prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko (BYT) blocked the work of the national parliament, Verkhovna Rada, on Tuesday, Ukrainian Parliament speaker said on Tuesday.
Arseny Yatsenyuk said parliament's work would not be resumed until an agenda could be coordinated and the rostrum remained blockaded.
BYT deputies continued obstructing access to the rostrum while Yatsenyuk spoke.
On Monday, President Viktor Yushchenko allowed parliament, which he dissolved earlier this month when he called for early parliamentary elections, to resume its work for several days to adopt urgent legislation to soften the impact of the financial crisis on Ukraine's economy.
Yushchenko told the government to shore up the banking sector, assist the country's key steel and chemical industries, adopt a balanced budget and regulate foreign trade.
He also ordered the creation of a one (b) billion hryvnia (UAH) (200 (m) million US dollars) stabilisation fund to support an economy hit hard by the global financial crisis, as his bitter political rivalry with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko dragged on.
Tymoshenko warned earlier on Monday that Ukraine was headed for economic stagnation.
She called for all political forces to form a broad coalition, but the main opposition party and Yushchenko's allies refused to meet with her on Monday to discuss her proposal.
Tymoshenko's bloc then stopped the legislation mooted by Yushchenko and work of the national parliament from continuing on Tuesday.
The Ukrainian economy has been severely shaken by the global crisis.
The government has had to rescue two top banks, the national currency's value has fallen around 12 percent in recent weeks, the stock market has been in free fall, and the country is seeking a loan of up to 15 (b) billion US dollars from the International Monetary Fund to help stabilise the financial sector.
