Why talented executives avoid expat jobs in China

Описание к видео Why talented executives avoid expat jobs in China

The last quarter decade has been a roller coaster for international managers who wanted to build a career in China. Around the time I arrived in China in 2002, the country had a billion people, an economy roughly the size of France, and had just join the World Trade Organization (WTO) one year before. A decade later, China was the second-biggest economy in the world, had a track record of consistent double-digit growth over many years, and became a true Dreamland for international managers who wanted to build a global career.

However, around 2016, which I call the end of the golden age for expatriate managers in China, things started to change. The economy cooled to around 5% growth per year—above the world average but far from its previous performance. Opportunities for international managers became fewer and farther between, and expatriate talent, especially high-level talent, started to avoid China as a destination for the next stage of their career.

In this video, we look at why that is:
The causes of recent expat talent shortage in both multinational and local Chinese companies,
Reasons why talented foreign managers leave jobs in China, or refuse to relocate there,
Strategies for managers who are managing human resources on behalf of companies,
Opportunities for job-seekers considering a career in China.
