St Lawrences Hospital. ( the old mental asylum )

St.Lawrences Hospital , Bodmin , Cornwall. This is a slide show of various visits I've made to this old abandonned asylum .( and a compliment to my fellow URBex mate djflava's video of the same place)

Origionally built as the county lunatic asylum. It was completely self sufficient with it's own farm. With the total area of the whole hospital site with the farm , and hospital buildings covering approx. 120 acres. The hospital also had its own fire brigade.
The first part of the hospital was designed by John Foulston , with the first foundation stone for the "Radial building" laid on March 25th 1817. It opened its doors to the first patient in 1820. It consisted of 112 cells and rooms. The cells for the Pauper patients and the more spacious rooms for paying patients.

After the Radial building had been built , much expansion took place with the building of more wards in seperate units ; the Carew building , Kendall building , Foster building and many more too.

Part of the spread out site has now been converted to housing , and offices . Mainly the Radial building (closed in the 90''s and converted) and part of the Carew house complex. Part of which is now known as St.Aubyn villas and houses luxury office suites.
The Harrison unit still stands unconverted and was origionally built as an isolation unit , closing in 2003.
The Foster complex of buildings are the main blocks that still remain , and currently still uncoverted at the time I made this slide show.
The Foster complex and associated buildings were built between 1902 and 1906 , with reception being moved to the front wing (opposite the new hospital that has been built in front.) As the older units such as the Radial building got closed and were converted.
The incredibly tight , and intricate security , has thankfully kept the remaining buildings "chav free" ;). Thank you for looking and reading .
