5 Bars does not mean faster internet for T-Mobile home internet. You need to check which band is your gateway connecting to. N41 band provides maximum download speed while the N71 is the extended range band and according to other reviewer it have the faster upload speed.

I moved my T-mobile gateway from the control center to my second floor bedroom by the window thinking that I will be getting a better performance because the tower is around .3 mile in that direction but for some reason I keep getting faster download speed placing the gateway inside the control room than in the open area. I contacted support and found that I am connecting to N71 every time I move the gateway out of the control room. It does not make sense because N71 band should reach the control room better and if N41 can reach a hidden gateway, it should be able to reach the gateway better with less wall but it does not work as expected in my location.

It is best to try placing the gateway on different area of your home and leave it there for at least 8 - 24 hours to check the performance before settling on the right place. In my situation, it is better to hide the gateway as I can get better download speed doing it that way. I average around 150Mbps during the day and around 260Mbps at night with band N41 when I needed it the most. For Band 71 is lower but more stable at around 100 Mbps download speed for 24 hours.
