STORYLINE:
Bill Clinton, a former US President and now the UN Special Envoy to Haiti, made a second trip to the earthquake-ravaged country on Friday.
He is expected to meet with Haiti''s leaders, visit a prominent AIDS clinic in Port-au-Prince and deliver supplies.
Clinton said in a statement on Thursday that he wanted to ensure that assistance for Haiti continues to be "effective, coordinated, and sustained in the weeks and months to come".
Funds for Haiti''s long-term recovery are being raised through the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.
US President Barack Obama tapped Clinton and former US President George W. Bush to lead private sector fundraising efforts.
The Clinton Foundation Haiti Earthquake Fund is also raising money.
Clinton''s visit came as a lawyer for 10 American Baptist missionaries who tried to take three dozen children out of Haiti said he would ask a judge to let his clients go free until their trial on kidnapping charges.
The missionaries were taken to a downtown courthouse on Friday to appear before an investigative judge in a closed hearing, a senior Haitian judicial official said.
The missionaries'' detention has raised concerns among other countries including France, whose foreign ministry on Friday urged the Haitian government to quickly set up a bilateral commission to look into adoption procedures.
The Baptist group, most of whose members are from two Idaho churches, had said they were rescuing abandoned children and orphans from a nation that UNICEF says had 380,000 youngsters in that plight even before the quake.
But at least two-thirds of the children involved in the case, ranging in age from 2 to 12, have parents, although the parents of some told The Associated Press they gave them up willingly because the missionaries promised the children a better life.
