The town of Puertomarín was born and grew next to a Roman bridge over the Miño river (rebuilt in the Middle Ages) and the Camino de Santiago. On May 18, 1212, the Order of San Juan granted privileges for its government and administration to the town.

When the Belesar reservoir was built in 1962, the town moved to neighboring Monte do Cristo. Some of the most important buildings, both civil and religious, were rebuilt there; especially the church of San Nicolás, in Romanesque style built by the Hospitaller Order of San Juan de Jerusalén, whose stones were numbered and reassembled in their current location.

In the seasons when the level of the swamp drops, the remains of the old buildings, the boardwalk and the primitive bridge are still visible.

In addition to being known for its landscape, Puertomarín also has very good brandy, which has received numerous awards. On Easter day the brandy is made there, in the square in front of the church, at the "Festa do Augardente".

In 2015, in the approval by Unesco of the extension of the Camino de Santiago in Spain to «Caminos de Santiago de Compostela: French Camino and Caminos del Norte de España
