The former DM&IR is in a transition phase; the classic EMD power is slowly being phased out by newer General Electric C40-8s. While this has largely displaced most of the tunnel motors, and SD40-2s, there are still pockets where they hold on. Some of C40-8s are off of the Missabe for a bit getting PTC added, thus the EMDs have made a small return to fill this void on the T-Bird trains.

In this video, we'll see T-Birds pulled by all EMD power as they run from the Thunderbird Mine to Fairlane for unloading. One set even features a tunnel motor trio, and the classic DM&IR ore car sets. A trip to the Iron Range wouldn't be compete without a taconite train, and we'll see one lead with a trio of smoking C40-8s. We'll first see the trio at Wolf, and then get it again near Ramshaw as it coughs up clouds of black smoke.
