Sustainable Development of the Power Electronics Industry in the Philippines – a Quarter Century Legacy

Sustainable development and nation-building go hand-in-hand. With its grass-roots just before the turn of the century, the local Power Electronics sector grew: from initial talks in the late 90’s between the University of the Philippines Diliman and what was then Astec Custom Power on the prospects of setting up a Power Electronics track, to the establishment of the first Power Electronics Diploma Course in UP Los Banos which, having been continued in Mapua Institute of Technology under the leadership of Dr. Vea (former Dean of the UP College of Engineering), has since generated more than 26 batches of Power Electronics graduates. This has provided a steady supply of engineers for the country’s power supply industry, led by the world’s premier precision power conversion company– Advanced Energy, Inc. AEI demonstrates the concept of sustainable development through continued innovation while upholding a strict code of ethics and maintaining Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) policies, with robust technical training programs executed within a culture of mentoring. All of these are critical not only for development at the corporate-level but also the advancement of the academe, e.g., through faculty immersion programs, thus ultimately contributing to the overall industrialization of our country.
